David Grabarkewitz was named the new Artistic and General Director of El Paso Opera on April 18, 2009. David is a native of Minnesota and was raised in Minnesota and Nebraska. He holds his undergraduate and graduate degrees from the Hartt School of Music in West Hartford, Connecticut.
Mr. Grabarkewitz has been and continues to be the Resident Stage Director for the New York City Opera at Lincoln Center. Some of the many shows he directed there were la BohĂ¨me, which was called â€śgripping, the best BohĂ¨me in New Yorkâ€ť by the New York Times and â€śinspired directionâ€ť by the New Yorker. Also Macbeth, The Love of Three Oranges, Rigoletto, Hansel and Gretel, Paul Bunyan, and Madama Butterfly, which was awarded the 2008 Prime Time Emmy Award for Best Live Classical Music or Dance. He has directed works for the Florida Grand Opera, Connecticut Opera, New Jersey Opera, Opera Omaha, Ft. Lauderdale Opera, Central City Opera and the Colorado Symphony Orchestra, among many others. He has taught and directed masterclasses among others at the Hartt School of Music, Boston Conservatory of Music, the New England Conservatory of Music, Georgia State University, Louisiana State University, and the Juillard School of Music.
