Our season culminates in a new presentation of Puccini‚Äôs¬†masterwork¬†Tosca, starring the great New York City opera¬†star Lauren Flanigan.¬†Puccini wrote his classic gut-wrenching tale of drama and tragedy in 1899. Come see Miss Flanigan, who¬†Time magazine called ‚Äúthe thinking man’s diva,‚ÄĚ in her international debut as Tosca in a new production of this startling masterpiece. Tickets for this spectacular production are on sale¬†TODAY by telephone only (online sales will begin soon).
There are more treats for Opera lovers throughout the season. We have our traditional Encores & Overtures event Sunday, Aug. 24 (150 Sunset Events Center). This year we celebrate the harmony between the city of El Paso and the Kingdom of Bhutan. The dinner features international opera stars Brian Downen, Jacques-Greg Belobo, Thomas Macleay, and Francesca Mazzulli and performances from the Kingdom of Bhutan’s Royal Academy of Performing Arts. Spring of 2015 brings A Grand Night for Singing, a wonderful evening of song and dance that benefits the El Paso Opera Young Artist Program. There will be music from light opera to musical theatre, with selections from Naughty Marietta, The Desert Song, Rose Marie, and many more, in a staged evening of sophisticated elegance.  Support the careers of our young local artists by attending this magnificent evening.
In November our Children’s Opera Workshop, re-titled the El Paso Opera YoungStars program, will launch its eagerly awaited second year of original operas created by children from around the region. Also in November, we inaugurate our New Opera Workshop program with a staged reading of Roger Ames’ new opera How Green Was My Valley.
