Spring 2014 brings the grand opera staging of Pucciniâ€™s classic five-hankie masterpiece,Â La BohĂ¨me. Â Save the dates: Thursday, April 10th and Saturday, April 12th at the Abraham Chavez Theatre. Â Artistic Director David Grabarkewitz calls this production â€śa traditional and electric new production that he has long been wanting to bring to El Paso.â€ť Â El Paso Operaâ€™sÂ Opera on the Edge moves to May 2014 and features a collaboration with Ballroom Marfa and the widely acclaimedÂ Vidas Perfectas(Perfect Lives), Robert Ashleyâ€™s ground-breaking opera that treats us to new perceptions on the relationship between music and language.
Encores & Overtures opens the 2013-2014 season with a passport to adventure on Sunday, September 8th, EPOâ€™s largest and most elegant fundraiser, followed by the 20thAnniversary Gala andÂ Opera for All, on Saturday, November 9th, a celebratory splash, hosted by Americaâ€™s most famous baritone, Sherrill Milnes and featuring the finest of international and national opera performers as well as talented local artists. Â The Gala starts with the theater performance and continues with a celebratory dinner at the El Paso Museum of Art.
This 20th season offersÂ Opera Extras, which include a collaboration with the Mexican Consulate General in the performance ofÂ Opera Prima on August 4th at the Scottish Rite Temple, a three-act opera featuring Maria Luisa Tamez, mezzo-soprano, and Carlos Serrano, baritone, with complimentary admission to the public. The best is yet to come!Â The El Paso Opera embarks upon another 20 years of presenting operatic jewels in our desert community.
The El Paso Opera serves and benefits over 20,000 individuals through performances, educational outreach programs, and employment opportunities. Productions create an average of 200-300 jobs per season and employ over 300 local artists. Outreach includes the Childrensâ€™ Opera Workshop and local schools. More than 1000 students attended last seasonâ€™sÂ Barber of Seville Youth Night for a delightful introduction to the classical works of Rossini.
